~What Our Rats Offer~

Buying from us means you have our support. We will do the very best we can to answer your questions, or point you in the direction where you can find the information you need in regards to the continuing care of your rats after their adoption. **We are NOT however veterinarians, and can not provide veterinary care/advise on sick rats. If you suspect your rat is sick, seek professional medical help immediately.

  • Our Pet rats come from generations of selectively bred domestic fancy rats.

  •  All our Rats are bred for gentle dispositions, friendliness, longevity, and health.

  •  We do Not breed strictly for color. Health and disposition are primary. Which is why our rats make the best Pets.

  • Our breeder rats are our pets. They are well socialized, get handled daily, and are assessed for any health issues before being bred or offered up for adoption. We do not breed aggressive rats, rats with tumors (or rats that have developed tumors), and do not keep our breeders in a racking / breeder system.

  •  Our breeding rats are health screened for Haunta, Leptospirosis, and Rat Bite Fever before being bred, and despite being raised in our home. Healthy rats that are screened regularly we feel make the best, and safest companions. Pet stores, feeder breeders, and hobby breeders dont regularly screen their animals which is why you run the risk of acquiring a sick animal from those sources.

  • If we are able, we will take back any unwanted rat previously adopted/purchased from us that is Healthy, was not exposed to wild rodents/ or other rats purchased from ratteries who do not health screen.

  • If we are not able to take back a rat, we will try to help you find a suitable home, or rescue to take your pet. Understand that in the event of an 'Emergency' rehoming situation we will need at least 7 days notice to be able to properly help.

  • Rats adopted from us will come with a small care package to help them transition into your home. Including a small bag of feed. Sudden changes in a rats diet can cause illness, so to help eliminate that we offer food to go home with your new pets.

  • A rat carrier/Transport cage may also be provided at an additional cost ($20) if you do not currently have a carrier suitable for your new pets.

Why all the fuss over a rat?

To put it plain and simply... breeding without my permission is stealing. You are stealing my bloodlines, my hard work, my effort, my time and ultimately my money invested; all of which are deeply valuable to me. I do not support thieves. I dont support breeding rats carelessly with no concern for each individuals health, temperament, disease resistance, or even conformation. If you want cool colored rats for your snake rack... my rats are not for you.

If you are looking for a non breeding PET for your family, classroom, 4-H Pocket Pet project, or want to get more involved with AFRMA and producing high quality animals for show.. Bella Nocturne Rattery can provide what you are looking for (pending the quality of each litter).

Fancy pet rats are intelligent, nurturing, kind, and regrettably often horribly abused/ mistreated because unfortunately their wild cousins are often pests and carriers of disease; diseases that unfortunately can also infect your captive pet. This (in conjunction with the belief that rats are filthy) seems to fuel the idea that its okay to mistreat them. A Fancy pet rat is NOT a wild rat, and should never be mistreated because you have the power to do so. Unlike other animals that we enjoy as pets, rats have an even deeper ability to feel the exact same emotions that we do. Thanks to their use in science, we now know that they are empaths (can feel the pain of another without having to experience it themselves), they mourn, they laugh, they form strong bonds (friendships) with each other and their owners, and will even bravely defend their favorite people (risking injury/death). Rats are beyond the slimy, low-life form that the ill-informed make them out to be. Rats are extraordinary, and in some cases smarter than your dog. They deserve your respect at the very least.

Despite everything we know about rats, sadly, in captivity most rats enjoy a very short lifespan living in isolation or in overcrowded conditions as breeders in a racking system. If they dont die from respiratory infections, poor nutrition, tumors, or being mauled by an aggressive cage mate, they may only have being fed alive to another animal to look forward to. The other half of the captive population gets to contribute to science and medicine via experimentation. Very few rats actually get to enjoy being a valued pet; which to us means living free from the afore mentioned horrors and never being used for reckless breeding (i.e contributing to the number of unwanted pets, and dooming their offspring to becoming food for another animal). Snakes need to eat, but they dont need to eat MY RATS or their offspring.

If you can not respect my decision to offer my rats strictly as pets-- and honor to uphold your end of the contract to keep them as pets, you are simply not a suitable adopter. And I am completely at peace with non-suitable parties purchasing else where.

Sincerely,
Bella Nocturne Rattery (on behalf of the Rats).
